How to make it
- Pick a themeOpen the Theme menu and choose one of thirteen lists. The words, the title on the sheet and the puzzle change together, and the preview redraws at once.
- Set the difficulty and gridEasy hides words across and down, medium adds diagonals, hard uses all eight directions. Let the grid fit the words or choose 10 to 20 squares.
- Print the puzzle and its keyPress Print or Download PDF. The answer key follows on its own page, and New variant shuffles the same words into a different grid.
Thirteen themes, ready to print
Each theme is a list of eighteen single words, twenty for the US states, chosen so that a reader of about eight or older knows most of them and an adult still has to look. The lists avoid brand names and characters from films or television, so a sheet can go home with any child or onto any break-room table. They are free word search puzzles in the plain sense: no account, no watermark and no limit on copies. The page opens on a fall word search printable, and the Theme menu holds the other twelve.
Because a theme is only a word list, the puzzle itself is not stored anywhere. Every time you open a theme, press New variant or change the level, the word search engine builds a new word search puzzle from the same words, places every one of them and fills the gaps with random letters. Two classes doing the Animals theme on the same day can each get a free word search puzzle of its own, and the Sheet number in the footer brings back any grid you liked.

|---|---|---|
| Fall | 18 | acorn, cider, hayride, orchard, scarecrow |
| Halloween | 18 | cauldron, costume, lantern, skeleton, witch |
| Thanksgiving | 18 | cranberry, feast, grateful, parade, stuffing |
| Christmas | 18 | gingerbread, ornament, reindeer, sleigh, wreath |
| Winter | 18 | blizzard, icicle, mittens, shovel, snowman |
| Animals | 18 | camel, dolphin, kangaroo, otter, zebra |
| Ocean | 18 | coral, jellyfish, octopus, seahorse, tide |
| Space | 18 | asteroid, comet, galaxy, nebula, telescope |

| Sports | 18 | archery, gymnastics, hockey, rowing, volleyball |
| Kitchen and cooking | 18 | casserole, colander, ladle, marinade, whisk |
| Garden | 18 | compost, geranium, lavender, mulch, trowel |
| US states | 20 | Alabama, Delaware, Kentucky, Vermont, Wyoming |
Easy word search to hard word search
Difficulty here means directions, and it is the setting that matters most. Easy hides words only left to right and top to bottom, which is how a beginning reader scans a page, so an easy word search is the one to give a class that is new to the puzzles. Medium adds diagonals that still read left to right. Hard adds backwards, upward and reversed diagonals, all eight directions, and that is what makes a hard word search feel hard: the eye has to recognize a word it is not used to seeing.
For a word search for kids in first or second grade, choose easy, a 12 by 12 grid and a theme with short words, such as Animals or Weather; remove a few of the longest words if the page feels crowded. Grades 3 to 5 can usually manage medium on 15 by 15. A difficult word search for teenagers or a quiz night uses hard, 20 by 20 and a theme with long words, such as Kitchen and cooking or US states. A hard word search printable on a 20 by 20 grid leaves plenty of filler letters between the eighteen words, so even practiced solvers have to work through it row by row.
If you are making a kids word search for a mixed class, print the same theme twice, once on easy and once on medium. Everyone hunts for the same words, and each child takes the sheet that suits them.
Large print word search printables
The squares grow to use the page, so a smaller grid prints with bigger letters. On grids up to 15 by 15 each square is close to half an inch, 12 mm, and the letters print at roughly 20 points, about the size of a large print book. That makes any theme a large print word search: choose 10 or 12 squares, stay on easy or medium, and keep the list to ten or twelve words by deleting the rest in the box.
A large print word search printable suits an older relative, a student with low vision or a group activity in a care home, where puzzles are often passed around a table. The word list under the grid prints at a normal reading size with a check box for each word, and Lowercase letters switches both the grid and the list for readers who find capitals tiring.
Word search puzzles for adults
Adults who want word search puzzles free of cartoon themes usually want two things: a grid that is actually hard and words that are not childish. Three themes are written with them in mind. Kitchen and cooking hides words such as colander, marinade and saucepan; Garden has geranium, lavender and seedling; US states has twenty names, several of them long enough to cross half a 20 by 20 grid.
To print free printable word search puzzles for adults, choose one of those themes, set hard and 18 or 20 squares, and untick the Name and Date line in More options. For a quiz night or a waiting room, Download PDF once and print as many copies as you need; New variant gives the next table a different grid of the same words, which stops neighbors from comparing answers.
Seasonal puzzles through the school year
Five of the themes follow the calendar. A fall word search or an autumn word search fits the first weeks of the school year, with apples, orchards and leaves. An October word search can be the Halloween theme, which keeps to pumpkins, owls, costumes and a friendly skeleton rather than anything frightening, so a Halloween word search printable suits a class party as well as a teenagers' table.
Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, and its list covers the meal and the parade. December brings the Christmas word search, with gingerbread, reindeer and stockings, and the Winter theme carries on into January with words that work whatever holidays a class celebrates. If your school prefers to keep holidays out of the classroom, Fall and Winter cover the same weeks without them.
Turning a theme into your own puzzle
Every list is editable. Delete words, add the names of the class or replace half the list with this week's vocabulary, and the Theme menu switches itself to My own words so it is clear the sheet is no longer the stock list. The title on the sheet changes back to a plain Word Search once you edit the words; type your own title in More options. For puzzles that start from a blank box, the word search maker for your own lists works the same way without the themes.
A theme list also travels. The Use this list in menu sends the words to bingo cards from the same theme, to a crossword, where you add a clue for each word, or to word tracing practice for the spelling side. A fall week can then run on one list: trace the words on Monday, find them on Wednesday and play bingo on Friday.
The word search PDF, the answer key and printing
Each theme is a free word search printable with its own key. Download PDF saves the puzzle and its key as one word search PDF, made in your browser, with the grid in vector form so it stays sharp at any printer resolution. The key page repeats the grid with a soft pink band over each hidden word, and the Answer key PDF button gives you the key on its own to keep at your desk.
US Letter or A4 is picked from your browser settings and can be switched in More options. In the print dialog, choose Actual size or 100% and turn browser headers and footers off, otherwise the letters shrink. A word search, word find or word seek puzzle is a quiet early-finisher job; a stack of printable mazes beside the word searches keeps the same pencil-only mood, and the crossword maker turns the same theme into a puzzle where the words have to be produced, not just found.
Questions
Is every word search free to print?
Yes. Every theme and every grid on this page is free to print or download as a PDF, with no account, no watermark and no limit on copies for your class, club or family. The puzzles are made in your browser, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to unlock, and the answer key is included.
Are the word search puzzles printable on A4 paper?
Yes. The page chooses US Letter or A4 from your browser's language and time zone, and the Paper setting in More options switches between them. The grid and word list are laid out again for the paper you pick, with 0.5 in margins, so nothing is cut off. Print at Actual size or 100% for the intended letter size.
How do I make a large print word search?
Pick any theme, choose a 10 by 10 or 12 by 12 grid and the easy or medium level, and delete words until about ten are left. On grids up to 15 by 15 the letters print at about 20 points. Switch on Lowercase letters if the reader prefers it, and print one puzzle per page.
Which level suits a word search for kids?
Easy, for most children up to second grade: every word runs across or down, the way they read. Medium, with diagonals, suits grades 3 to 5, and hard, with backwards words, is better kept for older children and adults. A 12 by 12 grid and a theme with short words keep an easy puzzle from feeling crowded.
Can I add my own words to a themed puzzle?
Yes. Edit the list in the Words box: delete a few, add new ones or paste a whole list. The Theme menu changes to My own words, and the puzzle is rebuilt with every word you typed, up to 40. If a long word cannot fit a small grid, the page names it and suggests a larger grid.
Can these word searches be played online?
No. They are made to print, and there is no online game on the site. The page builds the puzzle in your browser for paper or a PDF. For a class, you can project the answer key afterward so students mark their own sheets.
