How to make it
- Type one name per lineWrite the name the way the child should write it, usually a capital first letter and lowercase after. Paste a class list straight from a spreadsheet column.
- Check the class setOne page per name is already on, so 22 names give 22 pages, and the bar above the preview says so. Untick it to run names one after another.
- Print the class setPress Print with Actual size selected, or Download PDF for the copier. Save the list so next month's sheets take seconds.
Why a name is the right first word
A name holds a child's attention in a way a random row of letters cannot. It is on their cubby, their lunchbox and their artwork, and writing it is a skill they can see the point of. It also gives a short, fixed set of letters to master before the rest of the alphabet: a girl called Mia needs only three lowercase shapes and one capital to sign her drawings.
Type the name exactly as it should be written. Many kindergarten teachers teach a capital at the start and lowercase for the rest, because writing a whole name in capitals is a habit that later has to be unlearned. The sheet keeps your capitals and lowercase as typed; it never turns Sophia into SOPHIA.
A whole class in one PDF
Paste the class list, one name per line. One page per name (whole class in one file) is on from the start, so for a kindergarten class of 22 the result is one 22-page PDF. Each page carries that child's name as a dark model, three rows to trace and an empty row, with the Name and Date line at the top and the page address, pencilpage.com/name-tracing, in the footer. Print the file once and hand out the pages.
Classes rarely move at one pace. Build the set twice from the same saved list: once at 1 in with arrows on every letter for children who are just starting, and once at 3/4 in with fewer tracing rows for those who already write their name. Pull the right page for each child from the two piles, and nobody gets a sheet that is too easy or too hard.
Untick One page per name and the names run one after another, each with its own rows, over as many pages as they need, which suits a small group or siblings at a homeschool table. Click Save this list and give it a name such as Room 4 names; it appears under My saved lists on this device in every generator with a list box. After you print or download the PDF, a strip headed Next, with the same list offers the same names as a word search maker puzzle, bingo card generator cards, word tracing, a crossword or another name set, which makes a friendly first-week activity for a new class.
Settings for preschool and kindergarten
The preset is built for four- and five-year-olds: letters 1 in tall from top line to baseline, a dark example, three tracing rows, one empty row, one page per name, and the name repeated across each row whenever it fits, so a short name such as Mia appears twice per row while Olivia appears once. For three-year-olds or children still working on grip, go up to 1 1/2 in or 2 in. By the end of kindergarten many children manage 3/4 in comfortably. Outside the US and Canada the Letter size menu speaks in millimeters and school years instead, so the preset reads 25 mm, preschool, Prep and Reception.
Stroke arrows and numbers are set to First row: on the first tracing row every letter shows its arrows and stroke numbers, and the later rows keep an arrow on the first letter only, while the green start dots stay on every letter. Switch to Every letter for a child who starts in the wrong place, for example drawing the o of Noah from the bottom. Blue and red guide lines give a blue top line and midline and a red baseline, a pattern many classrooms use so a child knows the letters sit on the red line.
From tracing a name to writing it alone
Children usually move from tracing to independent name writing over several weeks, and the sheet can follow them. One workable sequence: in the first week, three or four tracing rows with arrows on every letter. Then three rows with Fade the later tracing rows on, so each copy gives a little less help. Then two tracing rows and two empty rows with arrows on the first letter only. Finally, one tracing row and the rest of the line empty.
Look at the empty row each time. When the name there is recognizable and the letters start at their dots without help, step down. Some children are ready in two weeks and some need the whole term, and both are typical; the guide on when children learn to write their name covers the usual range. Slipping a page into a plastic sleeve and using a dry-erase marker turns one print into a month of practice.
First names, last names and tricky letters
Add the last name on the same line when a child is ready, such as Leo Park. If a full name is too long to fit twice on a row, Repeat across the row simply shows it once, and a very long name wraps onto a second row at a word break. Apostrophes and hyphens are part of the print alphabet, so O'Neil and Mary-Kate work. Accented names work too: Zoë, José, Chloé and Ñandú print with their marks, as do macrons, carons and cedillas, and the start dots and arrows stay on the letter. A few letters, such as ø, ł and ß, are not in the stroke alphabet; a warning above the preview names them rather than dropping them quietly, and a school-style font from the Handwriting style menu can usually draw them.
Some letters in names cause more trouble than others: lowercase k and y, capital letters with three strokes such as A, and double letters as in Anna or Ollie. Numbers on the strokes show the order for multi-stroke letters. A child who struggles with one letter can practice it on its own with the letter tracing pages and come back to the name a few days later.
Your school's style, and where the names go
If your school teaches an Australian, UK, New Zealand or other national style, pick it in the Handwriting style menu, for example the Queensland Beginners style. Font styles are traced as a dashed outline without stroke arrows; the two print styles keep the arrows and start dots.
Names never leave your browser. They are used on this device to draw the sheet; your last settings, the class list included, and your saved lists stay in local storage here, so on a shared computer press Forget on this device, next to the saved lists, when you finish. There is no sign-up. One caution: Copy link puts the names into the link after the # sign. Servers do not receive that part, but anyone you send the link to can read the list. To pass the layout to a colleague without the class, use Share settings: the link carries the same settings with the example name in place of your list, and the page greets the colleague who opens it. When any link is opened, the page reads it and then clears it from the address bar.
Questions
How do I make name tracing worksheets for my whole class?
Paste the names one per line, check the preview and press Print or Download PDF. One page per name is ticked from the start, so you get a single file with a page for each child, at no cost and without an account. Saving the list means you can rebuild the set at a smaller size later in the year in a few clicks.
Can I make an editable name tracing worksheet with lines?
Every part of the sheet is editable before you print: the names, the title, the letter size, the number of tracing and empty rows, the guide lines and the arrows. Each row has a top line, a dashed midline, a baseline and a descender line, or choose 3 lines or Dotted thirds instead. The sheet itself prints as a fixed page, not a fillable form.
What letter size is best for tracing a child's own name?
For most kindergarten children, 1 in from top line to baseline is a comfortable start. Younger children and those still building pencil control do better at 1 1/2 in or 2 in. Move to 3/4 in when the letters in the empty row fit neatly between the lines, usually later in the kindergarten year.
Can I add a first and last name on the same line?
Yes. Type both on one line with a space between them. The name is traced as a whole, and if it is too long to repeat it appears once per row. Very long full names may wrap to a second row; a smaller letter size or putting the last name on its own line keeps it tidy.
Is there a watermark or a limit on pages?
No watermark, no sign-up and no paid tier, and no cap on names: a class list of any normal size becomes one PDF with a page per child. The footer shows only the page address, pencilpage.com/name-tracing, the style and a small sheet number. Copy link reopens the same set later, names and settings included.
Can I make name tracing in cursive?
Yes. Choose US traditional cursive or US modern cursive, or another country's joined style, in the Handwriting style menu. The name is drawn in that font and traced as a dashed outline that follows the joins. Fonts have no stroke arrows, so cursive names suit children who already know how the letters are formed.
