How to make it
- Choose the factsMultiplication and division together is preselected. Choose multiplication only while the tables are new, or division only once the class connects the two.
- Keep numbers up to 10Up to 10 covers every product the grade 3 standard asks for. Choose 12 if your school also teaches the 11 and 12 times tables.
- Print, then mark with the keyThirty problems print across the page with a line for each answer. The key follows on its own page; New variant makes tomorrow's sheet.
What third grade math asks for
The headline goal is in the Common Core standard CCSS 3.OA.C.7: multiply and divide within 100 fluently and, by the end of the year, know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory. Children get there through equal groups, arrays and skip-counting before any fact sheet, and they learn early that 24 ÷ 6 asks what number times 6 makes 24.
Around that goal, third graders add and subtract within 1000 with place value (CCSS 3.NBT.A.2), meet fractions as parts of a whole and on a number line, compare them and find simple equivalents (CCSS 3.NF.A.1 and 3.NF.A.3), and tell time to the nearest minute (CCSS 3.MD.A.1). Area and perimeter also arrive this year. Most 3rd grade math worksheets serve one of these goals, and the ones on this site are linked below.
How the facts sheet works
The preset prints thirty problems written across, such as 7 × 8 = and 56 ÷ 7 =, mixing multiplication and division with factors up to 10. Every division problem comes out exactly, with no remainders, because the quotient is built first and the dividend from it. A sheet avoids repeating a problem while enough different ones exist, and with factors to 10 there are plenty.
That makes these grade 3 math worksheets a fluency check rather than a teaching tool. The answer key prints on its own page with every answer in pink, so a child can mark their own sheet and see at once which facts are not there yet. The standard and a Sheet number print in the footer; the same number and settings rebuild the identical page.
An order for the times tables
Few classes teach the tables from 1 to 10 in order. A common sequence starts with the tables children can already skip-count, 2, 5 and 10, then moves to 3 and 4, then 6, 8 and 9, and saves 7 for last, because by then most of the 7 facts are already known from other tables. Knowing that 3 × 7 and 7 × 3 are the same fact cuts the work almost in half.
For a single table at a time, the times tables generator prints drill problems for one table or a chart with gaps to fill. Once two or three tables are known, come back here and use multiplication only with numbers up to 10, so the known tables mix with the new one. When multiplication is solid, add division: the pairs of facts reinforce each other, and a mixed sheet shows whether a child has made the connection.
Other 3rd grade math worksheets on the site
For addition and subtraction within 1000, the addition maker and the subtraction maker with 3 digits and regrouping mixed match the third grade standard, with vertical columns and a key. For fractions, the fraction worksheets compare and equivalent modes suit the end of third grade, although adding fractions belongs to fourth grade.
Clocks to the minute come from telling time worksheets with Times to the minute selected, in read or draw mode. Teachers who want free 3rd grade math worksheets for a whole unit can make one facts page, one column addition page and one clock page from the same morning's settings, each with its own key, and keep the links for next year.
| Third grade goal | Generator | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| Multiply and divide within 100 | this page | multiplication and division, numbers up to 10 |
| One table at a time | Times tables | one table, drill problems |
| Add and subtract within 1000 | Addition, Subtraction | 3 digits, regrouping mixed |
| Compare fractions | Fractions | compare or equivalent |
| Time to the minute | Telling time | minute |
How much practice, and how to keep it fair
Fact fluency comes from short, frequent practice. Five minutes a day with a third of a sheet does more than a long test on Friday. If you use a timer, compare each child with their own last time, never with a neighbor. A simple chart on the fridge or the classroom wall, one column per table, gives a child a clear picture of what is done and what is left.
Watch for a child who answers quickly but always gets the same two or three facts wrong. Those facts are often 6 × 7, 7 × 8 and 6 × 8; give them a few days of their own, then mix them back in. Math worksheets for 3rd grade should leave a child feeling that the tables are a finite list, because they are.
Year 4 in England, Year 3 in Australia
US third graders are about eight to nine years old, the age of Year 4 in England and Year 3 in Australia. In England, pupils are expected to recall the times tables up to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4, so set Numbers up to 12 there. The US standard code is left off outside American browsers, and A4 paper is chosen automatically.
After the facts, multiplication grows into bigger numbers on 4th grade math worksheets, with three- and four-digit numbers times a single digit. A child who is not yet secure with sums within 20 should spend a little time on 2nd grade math worksheets first, since multiplication rests on quick addition.
Questions
What math should a 3rd grader know?
By the end of third grade most US children are expected to know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory and the matching division facts, add and subtract within 1000, understand simple fractions and compare them, tell time to the minute and find area by counting squares. Pacing varies from school to school.
Are these third grade math worksheets free with answers?
Yes. Every sheet comes with an answer key page, and both are free to print or save as a PDF, with no account and no watermark. Press New variant for a different sheet with the same settings as many times as you need.
Can I make multiplication only sheets?
Yes. Choose Multiplication in the Operations menu. For one table at a time, such as only the 7s, use the times tables generator, which prints drill problems for a single table or a chart with missing products.
Do the division problems have remainders?
No. On this sheet every division fact divides exactly, which matches the third grade goal. Division with remainders comes later and is on the division and long division makers, where With remainders is a checkbox.
Should third graders learn the 11 and 12 times tables?
The US standard stops at products of one-digit numbers, so 10 × 10 covers it. Many schools still teach 11 and 12, and in England they are expected by the end of Year 4. Choose Numbers up to 12 to include them.
How long should a 3rd grade fact sheet take?
It depends on the child and how new the facts are. Rather than aim for a time, ask for steady, accurate work and compare each sheet with the last. When a full page is accurate and unhurried, the facts are ready to be used in bigger problems.
